Olympic Trial Medal Broken by TSA
After winning the Olympic Trials steeplechase at a time of 9:17:48, Emma Coburn was surprised to find her Olympic Trial medal damaged by the Transportation Security Administration. Coburn was flying home to Boulder, Colorado after winning the right to represent the United States at the Olympic games in Rio de Janeiro when she checked her luggage to find the damaged medal. She posted a photo on Twitter with the caption, “Unpacking from the Olympic Trials. Looks like TSA broke my medal. Big piece of glass broken off and missing.”

Just because they opened the bag doesn't mean they broke it. Rough handling by the airline could easily have done that. Note sure why you would pack a metal like that in checked luggage.. It's going to fall under the exclusions that airlines don't have to pay for.
Lakeviewsteve look at the photo again as there is a inspection notice next to the broken medal. That clearly means that the TSA opened the bag!
It's entirely possible, Lakeviewsteve, that it _was_ protected until TSA eviscerated its contents and left them wherever inside the bag.
Such a shame. This is why one should NEVER pack anything of value in their checked luggage.
So sorry for your loss, but how do you know TSA broke it and not a rough baggage handler? Also, why wasn't this keepsake protected in your carry on bag?
