O’Hare to Test Night Flight Rotation to Reduce Noise

In an effort to reduce the amount of noise caused by aircraft, the Federal Aviation Administration has plans to begin rotating night flights in and out of Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) beginning Wednesday evening. The FAA announced Tuesday that it had agreed to run a six-month test of the Chicago Department of Aviation’s “Fly Quiet” initiative, and this trial period is set to run through late December. The O’Hare Noise Compatibility Commission, which is comprised of municipalities and school districts surrounding the busy airport, voted in May to implement the plan. The intended effect of this rotation is to shift noise away from nearby suburbs like Bensenville and Northwest Side city neighborhoods and distribute it across suburbs such as Rosemont, Palatine and Des Plaines.
