Oh Good, Another Low-Cost Carrier

As if there were not enough new airlines announced this year, Etihad has agreed to partner with Air Arabia to produce Abu Dhabi’s first low-cost carrier, Air Arabia Abu Dhabi. The airline will operate as an independent joint venture of Etihad and Air Arabia. Tony Douglas of Etihad said, “this exciting partnership supports our transformation program and will offer our guests a new option for low-cost travel to and from Abu Dhabi, supplementing our own services. We look forward to the launch of the new airline in due course.” The new airline does not have a start date yet but will be based out of Abu Dhabi International Airport.

Air Arabia Abu Dhabi is one of Etihad’s many attempts at investing in other airlines, including Air Berlin, which is no longer in existence, and Alitalia, which declared bankruptcy in 2017 and has been experiencing insolvency ever since. Etihad’s vision for the new carrier is to supplement its own operations from Abu Dhabi and expand throughout the region. Douglas explained, “Abu Dhabi is a thriving cultural hub with a clear economic vision built on sustainability and diversification. With the emirates’ diverse attractions and hospitality offerings, travel and tourism play a vital role in the economic growth of the capital and the UAE. By partnering with Air Arabia and launching Abu Dhabi’s first low-cost carrier, we are serving this long-term vision.”

Hopefully, this venture will prove more successful than the previous for Etihad. The fleet and routes used by the new low-cost carrier are yet to be announced.
