NY Man Attacks Flight Attendant, Threatens to Blow Up Plane

Flyer stands accused of attacking flight attendants and making threats aboard a JetBlue flight.

A New York man stands accused of attacking flight attendants and making terroristic threats aboard a JetBlue Airways flight to Florida last week. The Sun-Sentinel reports Alija Kucuk, 29, could face federal charges of interfering with a flight attendant and threatening to blow up a commercial aircraft.

According to an FBI report, Kucuk was aboard JetBlue Flight 153 from John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) when the incident took place. As the aircraft achieved cruising altitude, Kucuk reportedly charged down the single aisle of the aircraft and toward a flight attendant, pushing two other attendants out of his way in the process.

When the attendants tried to calm him down, Kucuk allegedly punched one of them in the face and verbally accosted them using racial slurs. During this time, the FBI report notes that Kucuk also allegedly threatened to “blow up the plane.”

The flight attendants were ultimately able to subdue Kucuk and the flight was allowed to continue to PBI. It was unclear what caused the flyer to become unstable or specifically target the flight attendant. Upon landing, authorities met the aircraft to arrest Kucuk. He was booked into Palm Beach County Jail, where he was released Monday on bond.

As part of his $50,000 bail, the Palm Beach Post reports Kucuk will be subject to GPS monitoring, surrendering his passport and will be barred from flying on commercial aircraft until the resolution of his case. He is scheduled to return to federal court for arraignment on November 6.
