No More Plastic Water Bottles at the Airport?

Traveling through the airport in San Francisco any time soon? Make sure to BYOWB: Bring Your Own Water Bottle. The airport recently decided to eliminate plastic water bottles in all their forms, meaning from restaurants and stores alike — but you can still bring your own to fill up at the airport.

If you tend to pick up bottled water before a flight, you’re going to have to change your tactics at San Francisco International Airport.

As part of the airport’s effort to become zero waste by 2021, plastic water bottles are no longer allowed to be sold in restaurants or stores starting August 20. Instead, they’ll be able to sell glass, aluminum, or otherwise biodegradable bottles. But, you can BYOWB or Bring Your Own Water Bottle.

“This is a big move for the airport,” Doug Yakel, the airport’s public information officer, told CNN Business. “It just further supports our green initiative.”

The plastic bottle ban includes vending machines, as well. But don’t worry—if you’ve been traveling with another bottle from another airport and have a layover, or take an empty plastic bottle through security, it won’t be taken from you. You can still use it to fill up on water at any of the water fountains.

For now, the ban only applies to water products, like still and sparkling water, mineral water, and electrolyte water. So far, soft drinks, juice, iced tea, coffee, and any other non-water beverage will still be able to be in plastic.

I have and would travel with my own water bottle but have you tasted the water at some of the airports in the US let alone around the globe? It's despicable. Why filtered water stations are not available, especially in the wake of the Flint, Michigan water scandal is beyond me.

I've been traveling with the same Sigg water bottle for years because I don't want to stand in line to buy a bottle of filtered tap water for $6. It isn't that hard, folks. Besides, the tap water at SFO is pure, fresh Sierra snowmelt.
