Newark Liberty Evacuated for Second Time After Fire Reignites

Terminal B at EWR was evacuated while an electric fire was brought under control early Monday morning; later, the fire rekindled again causing a portion of the airport to shut down again.

A stubborn fire in a boiler room at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) caused a brief disruption at the airport in the early morning hours Monday. Firefighters brought the blaze under control, but the fire reignited hours later causing Terminal B at the airport to be evacuated for a second time, delaying flights.

New York City NBC affiliate WNBC reports that the original fire broke out in the ceiling of the boiler room shortly after 1 a.m., causing officials to evacuate nearly 200 passengers and employees from Terminal B. The terminal building was reopened a short time later, only to be closed again when the fire reignited. The second fire was brought under control by 4:30 a.m. and passengers and staff were allowed to return to the building just after 5 a.m.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey issued an alert to passengers flying through Terminal B at EWR at 5:29 a.m. Monday. The notice encouraged travelers scheduled to depart from the terminal to “Please reconfirm your flight with your carrier as some flights are delayed.”

No injuries were reported during either blaze which authorities say was likely sparked by faulty wiring. Airport officials say they are ventilating smoke-damaged areas of the airport and will continue to monitor the portion of the building affected by flames.
