Mother-Son Team Busted With 100,000 Ecstasy Pills

Drugs discovered sewn into suitcase at Israeli airport.

A mother-and-son team could face significant time behind bars, after airport officials claim that they were caught with 100,000 ecstasy pills in their suitcases. Jerusalem Online reports that the two were discovered with the drugs at Tel Aviv Ben Gurion Airport (TLV).

The shipment of MDMA was found on Monday, July 3. After arriving at the airport from the Netherlands, the 57-year-old woman and her 19-year-old son were held by customs officials for additional questioning. During the investigation, the two claimed they resided in the Netherlands and were visiting Israel for a “family event.”

However, after additional questioning, the two allegedly admitted to their part in bringing in over 16 pounds of pills, with an estimated street value of nearly $430,000. The drugs were discovered sewn into the side of a double-walled suitcase carried by the two.

The mother-and-son team were arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking, as well as importing and selling illegal drugs. Both were held over for court hearings, with the potential of facing a prison term for carrying drugs into the country.

In 2016, at least two flyers through TLV were arrested for attempting to smuggle ecstasy. Both were busted in July: one attempted to hide the drug in wine bottles hidden in a suitcase, while the other used the guise of an Ultra-Orthodox Jewish person to bring drugs into the country.
