Marriott Plans Over 30 Luxury Hotel Opening in 2022

With a pent-up demand for travel, Marriott International says they are planning to add even more luxury hotels to their portfolio in 2022.
After two years of travel being mostly shut down, Marriott International is making a big bet on luxury hotels by adding over 30 new properties to their portfolio in “iconic and emerging” locations.

The hospitality giant announced the new additions at the International Luxury Travel Market show in Cannes.

Australia, Mexico and South Korea to Get Luxury Hotel Brands

The new properties will be distributed across six of Marriott’s luxury brands, with the goal of creating immersive experiences in international destination cities. The 30 hotels will join the already 460 luxury properties already in the Marriott network.

In addition to opening new Ritz-Carlton properties in Arizona and New York, Marriott will also add or renovate properties on three additional continents. The company is planning to open a new Ritz-Carlton in Melbourne, along with a property in China’s Jiuzhaigou valley. Properties in Moscow, Naples and Grand Cayman will also receive major renovations in the year. The new openings will culminate with the launch of the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection in May 2022.

For the St. Regis brand, the focus remains on bringing luxury to leisure destinations. 2022 will see new hotel openings in Belgrade, Chicago, as well as the opening of a resort in Rivera Maya, Mexico.

Marriott’s modern W Hotels will also see growth, focusing on cities targeting a younger visitor base. Travelers can expect new properties to pop up in cities including Dubai, Sydney and Toronto.

The boutique EDITION hotels will grow in the new year, with Marriott adding to their 14 properties currently in operation. New hotels will pop up in the new year in destinations including Doha, Madrid, Rome, Mexico and Japan. Other brands opening new hotels in 2022 include The Luxury Collection with debuts in six nations, while the JW Marriott will open new properties in at least four cities.

This announcement comes after a study determined Marriott had the most construction projects in the pipeline. According to Hotel Business, the Maryland-based company has over 1,200 projects in the works, representing over 160,000 new rooms.

Additions Mark Latest Changes to Marriott Bonvoy Footprint

The focus on luxury travel is the latest shift for Marriott, after making major changes to the Bonvoy loyalty program for 2022. In October, the company announced they would eliminate the award chart in favor of an awards system that is more directly tied to a room’s daily rate.
