Marriott Experiments with Day Pass, Stay Pass and Play Pass

Offering an alternative to working from home, Marriott International is experimenting with three different pass levels intended to help people get out safely, while earning Marriott Rewards points. The company is trialing three different pass levels in three cities, ranging from a day pass for a hotel room, to luxury packages at some of the most desirable resort locations.

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced many people to stay productive from the confines of their houses or apartments, as the many “safer from home” orders closed offices and schools across the United States. To help travelers battle the doldrums of being stuck in their living rooms, Marriott International is rolling out three new packages which allow guests to get out safely while earning Marriott Rewards points.

Day Pass, Stay Pass and Play Pass – Three Options for Three Types of Workers

The three new packages – the Day Pass, the Stay Pass, and Play Pass – are the reflection of research completed by the hotel brand to understand what today’s travelers are looking for. According to Marriott, 42 percent of over 400 business professionals surveyed say they would consider working from a hotel room for a variety of reasons, including creating a physical boundary between home and work, and focusing on major presentations, projects and meetings.

As the name suggests, the Day Pass would accommodate those who just need a hotel room workspace for a day. Guests would have access to the room for 12 hours, 6 a.m. check-in to a 6 p.m. check-out. During the time, those in the room would have access to Wi-Fi, food, beverages and other spaces in the hotel. They would also be able to use the business services at the hotel, including printing, faxing and scanning. Marriott Bonvoy Platinum, Titanium or Ambassador Elite members would also have access to the lounge. The Day Pass is currently only offered in Atlanta, Phoenix, Dallas, New York, Toronto, London, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong.

Stay Passes take the Day Pass concept a little longer, allowing guests to stay overnight. Check-in would still begin at 6 a.m., but guests would be allowed to stay overnight in the room and check out at 6 p.m. the following day. In addition to all the benefits of the Day Pass, the Stay Pass allows guests staying over to access all hotel amenities, including pool and workout facilities.

The Play Pass is intended for those who have mobility to travel and work from anywhere in the world. Available at a select number of resorts in Bali, Venice, Hawaii, Florida, California, Arizona, Cancun, Rio de Janeiro, Egypt, Cyprus, Thailand, and Spain. Guests can take advantage of a dedicated business concierge, preferred office and study spaces, and curated experiences for all ages. Families can also enjoy supervised activities for kids during the day.

All packages allow guests to earn Marriott Rewards points, and take advantage of elite benefits. Guests can also earn nights towards elite status, where available.

Marriott’s New Packages Latest Hotel Plan to Bring in Customers

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, Marriott’s plan is the latest example of hotels getting creative to welcome guests back. Earlier in October 2020, Hilton Honors announced they would reduce elite status requirements for the 2021 benefit year, while allowing guests to rollover all nights stayed in 2020 towards the next year’s status plan.

After Arne arrived, I gave up Marriott after 40 years of loyalty. I am now staying at Hyatt, and I am not completely happy, but I don;t feel like I am being hustled. Customer loyalty is real, and schemes like this one will not work. The trust is gone, and it takes a long time to rebuild trust.

This sounds like a really nice idea. Now what about today’s real world reality? With virus restrictions different from state to state, county to county, and city to city what amenities will be available? I’ve had to relocate twice in the last few months after discovering after checking in that ‘due to local restrictions’ the restaurant was only available for a few hours a day, the pool, exercise room, and other facilities were closed. That said I’m in.
