Man Slams Ryanair for Blocking His Chinese Wife From Flying

David Bookbinder, a Derbyshire County council leader, claims that Ryanair was unfair in not allowing his wife, Wang Yi, to fly out of East Midlands Airport (EMA) for what he claims was a visa-related issue.

According to Bookbinder, Ryanair informed them that Yi’s visa did not permit travel in the EU Schengen zone, but he claims that his own British passport bypasses the need for both passengers to travel with the appropriate paperwork.

A Ryanair Spokesperson responded: “It is each customer’s own responsibility to ensure they have the correct travel documents for their journey, as stated in our terms & conditions at the time of booking … Our records confirm that the customer in question was not in possession of a valid travel visa and was correctly denied boarding.”

I suspect they didn't have all of the required documentation. His passport alone was not enough, proof of the marriage and her documentation to reside in the UK would have been needed. Did they have that? If not, then this is not news

Minor correction, the non EU spouse must have a residence permit in UK and documentation of marriage to a EU citizen endorsed by UK and the EU citizen must accompany the spouse to get visa free travel.

As the UK is not part of Schengen does the wife still get visa free travel to Schengen countries?

The man is correct. According to Schengen visa agreement, all EU citizens and their non-EU spouses are allowed visa free, provided they have the paperwork showing that the spouse is married to a EU citizen.

Wait, the husband says his passport allows his wife to travel with him without documentation? How does that work?
