A fence-jumping passenger claims he was escaping someone shooting at him, but instead may have been trying to catch a flight
An Arizona man will spend the night in jail, claiming self-defense as a reason for jumping over a fence at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT). The Charlotte Observer reports 36-year-old Jovany Castillo Lugo was arrested by police and charged with trespassing on airport property after allegedly jumping the fence and being approached by airport personnel.
According to police, Lugo was found on the secure side of the fence by airline employees and Transportation Security Administration agents. In his story, Lugo initially claimed he was trying to get away from people shooting at him near the terminal building. However, it was quickly determined nobody was shooting at him near the property.
Instead, a police investigation determined that Lugo arrived at CLT with a female companion after the two had used drugs earlier in the day. While at the airport, he allegedly tried to catch a flight to Texas. However, Lugo instead climbed one of the exterior fences and was apprehended quickly. In a statement, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police cited the quick actions of airport stakeholders in bring the situation to resolution quickly.
“As TSA has said many times, CLT’s security system is a layered approach,” police told the Charlotte Observer in a statement. “This layered approach was successful in a quick apprehension of this person.”
Lugo was booked into the Mecklenburg County Jail on two misdemeanor charges of first degree trespassing and carrying a concealed weapon. As of press time, Lugo remained in custody awaiting an appearance before a judge on his charges.
