Man Doesn’t Move For 17-Hour Flight, Baffles Researchers

What’s the longest you’ve ever sat still for a stretch on a long haul flight?

This passenger probably passed all of our best records when he managed to stay put for a 17-hours on Qantas’ recently-launched flight from Perth to London.

On this particular flight, he was taking part in a study by The University of Sydney which has been investigating passenger comfort on long-haul flights. To test just how long the average passenger stays seated, they attach wearable tech to volunteer passengers that tracks their mental state, anxiety levels, sleep patterns, recovery from jet-lag and how many steps they take while on board.

And this man took zero. He didn’t even get up to go to the bathroom.

“The one thing we couldn’t believe was how little [he] moved. One subject took zero steps,” said Professor Stephen Simpson from the Charles Perkins Centre at the University of Sydney.

They even double-checked their equipment to make sure it was functioning properly.

One theory? As a business-class passenger on Qantas’ lie-flat seats, he had no need to get up and move around. But that doesn’t explain the superhuman strength of his bladder.

I did 9ish hours, DFW > FRA on LH ~5 years ago. I literally couldn't move, because the guy in front of me reclined and pinned my knee. I haven't sat non-exit row / bulkhead since.

I did not get up at all on a 14.5hr EWR-PVG flight back in 2010...2011. I may have stayed up the night before and slept through most of the flight.

My theory is that he was wearing super absorbent pampers and thats why no need to go to the bathroom.

I’d test the condition of his skin. I’d imagine poorly hydrated, dry skin with very large pores.

"But that doesn’t explain the superhuman strength of his bladder" If you don't drink anything for 17hrs, you won't need to pee. Especially if you just sleep the whole time.
