Elderly Woman Alleges Sexual Assault on WestJet Flight

A man was arrested by authorities after he allegedly assaulted a fellow passenger aboard a WestJet flight.

A 20-year-old Canadian man is accused of committing sexual assault against another passenger aboard a recent WestJet Airlines flight from Calgary to Halifax. The Calgary Herald reports the male, whose name has not been released, was arrested by Royal Canadian Mounted Police upon landing at Halifax Stanfield International Airport (YHZ) Tuesday evening.

According to an RCMP representative, the incident occurred aboard WestJet Flight 226, a Boeing 737-700 with 132 onboard. The man was reportedly seated next to a 69-year-old woman who told a flight attendant he’d sexually assaulted her. The flight attendant promptly reseated the alleged victim and notified the captain. When the flight touched down at YHZ, police boarded the aircraft and arrested the man.

“We know at this point they were both awake, they were sitting side-by-side each other,” RCMP Cpl. Greg Church told the Calgary Herald. While officials said that the woman was not physically injured, they did not elaborate on the nature of the assault, nor on any other details of the allegations.

The male was ultimately released by police on a promise to appear in court. Church says the RCMP is in the process of conducting interviews with passengers aboard the aircraft to learn more about the allegations. At the time of reporting, formal charges have not been filed in court.

In a statement to the Calgary Herald, a WestJet representative said the airline will cooperate with the investigation. “We are taking this incident extremely seriously and will work closely with investigators as part of the legal processes that will now unfold,” said spokesman Robert Palmer.
