Legacy Carriers Vow Refunds in Wake of Executive Order

American, Delta and United band together to assist passengers barred from entering U.S.

All three of America’s legacy carriers have found a new bond when it comes to Middle East policy: assisting those who cannot enter the United States under a new Executive Order signed by President Donald Trump. CNN Money reports all three carriers will offer refunds to travelers from the seven nations, including Syria, who now cannot enter the United States.

Delta Air Lines was among the first airlines to openly offer refunds to those affected by the travel ban, announcing in a press release that flyers could contact their local reservations office for assistance. Similar assistance was then extended by American Airlines, followed by United Airlines. Oscar Munoz, chief executive of United, told CNN Money they would offer “refunds and other accommodations” to those caught behind the ban.

American Airlines went one step further, issuing a letter from chief executive Doug Parker to employees about the Executive Order. Although the airline acknowledged that the Executive Order was law for now, it should not be considered a reflection of the carrier.

“As a global employer […] this Executive Order does not affect the values that this company is built upon — those of diversity, inclusiveness and tolerance,” Parker wrote. “At a time when the world is watching, our industry affords us a unique opportunity to show firsthand what true compassion and kindness look like.”

In separate statements over the weekend, other international carriers offering service to the affected nations, including British Airways, Emirates and Etihad Airways, said they would comply with the order as well. Both British Airways and Emirates will offer refunds to passengers affected by the order.

In reference to the misplaced modifier in Doug Parker's quote, it sounds like he just enhanced his Communications Department.
