Last Year Turned Out to Be One of the Safest Years to Fly

Despite a number of high-profile, fatal accidents, 2016 was actually one of the statistically safest years in aviation. In addition to five fatal accidents involving commercial airliners, a firefighter was killed extinguishing a fire aboard an Emirates flight (the passengers of which all survived), and an attempted flight bombing in Somalia killed only the terrorist. International aviation consultancy to70 counts 271 total deaths in these seven separate events.
