Kansas City Hotel Worker Accused of Attempted Rape

The Kansas City Star reports 30-year-old Fletcher Clardy of Kansas City, Kansas was arrested on the single count after the traveler filed a police report.

Front Desk Employee Allegedly Copied Key to Perpetrate Assault

According to the reports, police were called to the Hotel Phillips in Downtown Kansas City on December 17, 2021. Upon arrival, they spoke to a female guest, who said she was sexually assaulted by the hotel worker.

In her account, the guest said she was in town for a business trip and was drinking at the hotel bar. After packing in her room ahead of an early outbound flight, she returned to the bar at 11:45 p.m. to have a few more drinks. She said Clardy was serving them until the bar closed.

The traveler returned to her room between 2 and 2:30 a.m. and verified the door was locked behind her before going to sleep. Two hours later, she claims Clardy was in her room, attempting to disrobe her. She said she recognized Clardy’s voice after screaming at him to get off of her.

The police report notes both the hotel general manager and chief engineer turned over records relating to when room keys were made. Logs show a duplicate key was made prior to the alleged assault, while surveillance video recordings show Clardy at the machine. The employee was fired for policy violations on December 30 and arrested by police the next day.

The historic hotel is affiliated with Hilton Hotels and Resorts in the company’s Curio Collection. A spokesperson for the hotelier declined comment, noting that the property was independently owned and operated.
