JetBlue Unveils Relief Initiative for Hurricane-Hit Puerto Rico

The multi-tranche program will seek to address both short and long-term relief issues on the devastated island.

JetBlue, Puerto Rico’s biggest airline, is doing its part to assist with relief efforts on the island following the devastation caused by Hurricane Maria. On Thursday, the carrier unveiled its 100x35JetBlue program, which will see the airline launch 35 different disaster relief initiatives over the course of the next 100 days. The program, the name of which references the island’s 100×35 mile size, is comprised of a host of specific individual initiatives which are aimed at providing both short- and long-term relief to Puerto Rico.

These various tranches will aim to provide free transport for medical personnel and supplies as well as raising awareness and funds for relief efforts across the island. In a statement, JetBlue has said that it will continue to offer reduced, relief fare pricing for passengers on direct flights to or from Puerto Rico through November 15. For those coming to or from the U.S. mainland, fares are capped at $135.

It has also said that it will be waiving baggage and pet fees throughout the autumn.

Additionally, JetBlue will be inviting passengers on all of its flights to donate to its relief campaign via its GlobalGiving page. The carrier has said that it will be matching contributions of up to $500,000 dollar-for-dollar until November 15.

Thus far, the carrier has donated over $1 million in relief supplies following the hurricane.

Commenting on the carrier’s initiative in a statement, Robin Hayes, JetBlue’s president and CEO, said, “The heartbreaking and devastating situation in Puerto Rico compels us to take action. Using our strengths as an airline, our partnerships, and our mission of inspiring humanity, we aim to make a positive impact on this island we call home. We know 100 days is just the start, but we hope it’s a start that will make a meaningful difference.”
