This year’s expanded Trip Advisor Travelers’ Choice Awards named Singapore Airlines as the best in the world, while Southwest Airlines was the highest ranked U.S. carrier.

On Monday, Trip Advisor announced the winners of the 2018 Travelers’ Choice Awards for airlines. In addition to naming the best airlines in the world, this year’s expanded rankings included categories for best airline in a given region and best first class, business class, premium economy and economy class service within those regions.

Singapore Airlines was named “The 2018 World’s Best Airline.” According to Trip Advisor, the title was determined by a proprietary algorithm which weighted actual traveler reviews based on the frequency and quality of both positive and negative feedback over the 12-month period.

“We are honored to be this year’s recipient of the Best Airline in the World title in the prestigious TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice Awards for Airlines 2018, Singapore Airlines CEO Goh Choon Phong said in a statement accepting the top prize. “The award is a validation of the hard work and dedication of our thousands of staff all around the world, who focus their attention every day on ensuring that Singapore Airlines remains competitive on a global level.”

Southwest Airlines was the highest-ranked airline based in North America. Southwest also earned the title of the number six airline in the world, coming in just behind Taiwan-based EVA Air and ahead of number seven ranked Jet2 Airlines. Although Southwest was singled out for “Best Economy Class for North America,” JetBlue took home the regional prize for “Best Business Class.”

“It’s an honor to receive several TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice awards for Airlines including being the only U.S.-based carrier named a top ten airline in the world,” Southwest Airlines VP Ryan Green said. “The real winners today are our more than 120 million customers who put their trust in Southwest to get them to where they need to be safely, on time, and with the world-renowned hospitality our 60,000 Southwest employees provide.”

Dark horse candidate Jet2 was the only U.K.-based airline ranked among the best in the world. The ultra-low-cost carrier was ranked ahead of rival EasyJet and flag-carrier British Airways to be named “The Best Airline in the U.K.” as well.

“We have been beating the competition to win prestigious awards in the UK for some time, and now we are taking that success onto a global stage,” Jet2 CEO Steve Heapy noted. “The TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice awards for airlines are based on the experiences of paying customers, which makes them truly representative and all the more rewarding to receive as a result.”
