Japan’s Mt. Aso Erupts, Flights Canceled
Mount Aso, Japan’s largest active volcano, caused flight disruptions and at least 20 cancellations since it erupted Monday morning, spewing clouds of thick ash into the air. Kumamoto Airport (KMJ), which is just 20 kilometers from the volcano, reports cancellations from ANA and JAL through early Tuesday.
“We found that the smoke rose not only vertically but also horizontally,” said Sadayuki Kitagawa of Japan’s meteorological agency. “The eruption could have pyroclastic flows.”
The agency is advising travelers to stay away from the volcano.
