An official probe has been launched by the Japanese government into an engine malfunction that occurred on a Japan Airlines flight during which the aircraft shed mechanical parts that damaged property in Kumamoto prefecture.

“I instructed JAL not to wait for the ministry’s investigation but to go ahead with investigating the cause and take the necessary countermeasures,” said Keiichi Ishii, Japan’s Transport Minister, at a press conference.
