Japan Hotelier’s Denial of Historical Massacre Draws Fire

APA Hotels owner Toshio Motoya was found to be widely distributing copies of his book – The Real History of Japan: Theoretical Modern History II – throughout his hotel outlets. The book has elicited official condemnation from the Chinese government and a boycott from Chinese hotel booking services for its denial of The Rape of Nanjing from ever having occurred in 1937.

Allegedly available in every guest room of Motoya’s properties, the volume is also available for purchase in all hotel gift shops.

I had a hotel nightmare during a Japanese holiday and ended up staying in an APA Hotel in Osaka out of necessity. I was amazed by the amount of propaganda in the room. Being American I thought it was funny (obviously the Rape of Nanjing is not...) given how sterile our hotels tend to be. I googled the owner at the time and he has an interesting story. With the exception of a multitude of Chinese tour groups the hotel was fine with a very helpful staff. I guess "The Real History..." wasn't published at the time.
