Japan Airlines Offers Double FOP and Status Extensions

Japan Arlines, JAL, FLY ON

Due to the many flight cancellations as a result of the coronavirus outbreak, Japan Airlines (JAL) has released a new promotion for its FLY ON Points Program (FOP). JAL is offering doubled FOP for any JAL Group coded flight taken between February 1, 2020, and July 31, 2020, as well as a one-year extension for any eJAL points or miles that have or will expire between February 29, 2020, and July 31, 2020.

Doubled FLY ON Points (FOP)

Any domestic or international trip taken on a JAL Group operated flight between February 1 and July 31 will earn points at double the rate (codeshare flights are not applicable). The points will automatically be added into the JAL Mileage Bank (JMB) member’s account for eligible flights taken during this timeframe – members do not need to pre-register. For trips taken between February 1 and March 31, members should expect to see the double points in their account by the end of April.

Japan Airlines notes that FLY ON Point bonuses, such as the JAL Card first time boarding FOP bonus, are not doubled.

Expired Miles and eJAL Points

The promotion for expired miles and eJAL points is available to JMB members who register between March 26 and July 31 (advanced registration is required). Once registered, any miles and eJAL points that have expired since February 29 will be credited back to the member as eJAL points at the end of the following month and will be valid for one year. Miles convert to eJAL points at 1.5 points per mile, while eJAL points will be credited back at the same number they were when they expired.

How Does this Work with the Default Multiplier?

Conversation in the FlyerTalk forum brought up an important detail left off of JAL’s website. One user asked how the double FOP would work with the default multiplier for some of JAL’s flights. As of now, the airline offers x2 points for domestic flights, and x1.5 for flights connecting Japan with Asia, Oceania, or Vladivostok, so the question is whether the double FOP would be on top of, or instead of, the standard multiplier.

One user responded to the question and confirmed that the double FOP would be in addition to the current multiplier:

“Had some free time and asked JGC office. I can confirm that this work the same as the previous elites double FOP, eg. For base mile of 500 miles route on domestic route, it’ll be 500 x 2 x 2 = 2000 FOP (+ 400 FOP depending on your ticket type).”

Pretty easy to offer big bonuses on flights when nobody is flying...
