Iran May Refuse Airbus A380 Purchase
After signing a $27 billion deal with Airbus in January to purchase 118 aircraft, Iran is reportedly reluctant to accept the A380s as part of the deal due economic sanctions imposed by the United States against Tehran. “We always made clear this is an option,” said an unidentified Iranian official. “It is possible to switch to other models.” The agreement made by Iranian national airline Iran Air and Airbus is still pending, although Airbus still requires the approval of the United States Office of Foreign Assets Control because over ten percent of Airbus components are manufactured in the United States. One Airbus spokesperson said: “Following the preliminary agreement for 118 aircraft signed in January with Iran Air, negotiations are progressing, and as with all agreements, it takes time for them to be firmed up and finalized.”
