In Brief: Volcanic Activity in Indonesia Prompts Closure of Four Airports

Travelers on the island Bali found themselves stranded Friday after volcanic ash from Mount Raung prompted the closure of four Indonesian airports — Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS), Lombok International Airport (LOP), Blimbingsari Airport (BWX) and Notohadinegoro Airport (JBB).

Authorities suspended all flights in and out of the four airports early Friday morning. The closures will remain in effect until at least 10 p.m.

“We want to take precautions so we’re not allowing any flights in or out of Bali,” said Ida Bagus Juliatnyana, spokesman of the nation airport authority.
