In Brief: United Rewards MileagePlus Members With Miles in Exchange for Donations to Nepal Relief Effort

In light of the 7.8-magnitude earthquake that devastated Nepal over the weekend, United Airlines has announced it will reward MileagePlus members with miles if they make a donation to the American Red Cross, Americares, Airlink and Operation USA. With the death toll surpassing 4,600 and climbing as rescue efforts continue, the airline is jumping onboard to aid in the relief effort.

Under the airline’s donation plan, which was announced Monday, MileagePlus members have the chance to earn up to 1,000 miles in exchange for their contribution. The full donation-to-points chart can be found below.

DIRTYDAN, the links in the LA Times take you to Crowdrise, a donation site that works with a bunch of non-profits. You get to deduct your donation to the extent your tax situation allows. UA probably gets to expense or claim a charitable donation for the bonus miles they give you. Crowdrise does charge non-profits an overhead fee (3% I think?), so more of your cash will go to the non-profit you choose if you go directly to their website vs through Crowdrise (which is what I did), but then you won't get the bonus miles. But UA doesn't interfere with your tax deduction if you use this method. --arun

Let me understand this... I give money to UA (via the website in the story), they issue me miles, declare the miles as an expense, and then they also get to collect the tax refund from my "donation". They're heroes.
