In Brief: Thailand “Red Flagged” by ICAO Due to Unresolved Safety Issues

A recent audit by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has earned Thailand a “red flag” over concerns over that the country’s aviation safety standards aren’t as adequate as they should be. Back in March, ICAO gave the country 90 days to address specified safety concerns, but the results of Thursday’s audit revealed Thailand had failed to do so.

Although Thai Airways released a statement claiming it only functions with the highest safety protocol, Alan Polivnick of Watson Farley & Williams, a global law firm that specializes in aviation, said how other countries respond to the flag will be the largest issue. When ICAO disclosed their initial safety concerns back in March, several Asian countries turned against Thailand, banning Thai airlines from expanding routes to their respective nations.
