In Brief: Sen. Menendez Denounces IATA’s Carry-On Rules, Warns Airlines Will Use “Gimmick” to Gouge Flyers

Sen. Bob Menendez of New Jersey took a stand against IATA’s recently proposed carry-on rules at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) Monday. During the press event, Menendez claimed airlines could use the new size regulations to unfairly make more money off of consumers.

“I’m obviously concerned this proposal to cut the size of allowable carry-ons is a gimmick so airlines can keep padding those bag profits,” said Menendez. “I’m telling U.S. airlines that if our luggage has to go on a diet, the result cannot be another airline-industry profit binge. We already have less seat-space, less leg-room, fewer options and higher costs – we have to stand up for consumers and say ‘no’ to the airline industry.”

I think we'd all benefit from having the airlines actually enforce their existing regulations first. It's rarely done today, and when everybody can walk onto the plane with the kitchen sink (and I've seen it), no wonder they start checking luggage halfway through the boarding process. Once the existing rules are followed, and then if there is still a crunch for space, I'm all for the smaller carry ons.

@Jallred6: Let him worry about it after he helps us travelers first, THEN let him worry about that.

Perhaps the Senator should worry more about his recent indictment for bribery.
