In Brief: National Radar Outage Halts All Airport Operations Across New Zealand

A national radar failure suspended operations at airports across New Zealand for Tuesday, resulting in hundreds of groundings and delays. The “internal network failure” lasted about two hours and was “an extremely rare event,” according to New Zealand Air Line Pilots’ Association spokeswoman Lisa Williams.

Pilots operating aircraft at the time of the outage also lost radar communication, although they were still able to communicate with air-traffic control. The company behind the management of the radar systems, Airways Corporation, says the issue has been identified and resolved. Airways Corporation said the safety of aviation operations was not compromised by the outage.
