In Brief: Protesters Breach Fence at Heathrow, Chain Themselves Together on Runway

Passengers flying out of London Heathrow Airport (LHR) faced delays Monday when a group of climate change activists — known as “Plane Stupid” — staged a protest on one of the airport’s runways. Thirteen demonstrators, protesting LHR’s expansion plans, breached the perimeter fence at about 3:30 a.m. and chained themselves together.

The demonstration forced a three-hour closure of the runway and cancellation of 22 flights. The protesters were eventually removed, with nine arrested “on suspicion of Aviation Act offences,” according to authorities. LHR apologized for the morning’s disruptions and encouraged travelers to check their flight status with airlines before coming to the airport.
