In Brief: Offensive Shirt & “Freedom of Speech” Argument Gets College Kid Booted From Flight

Daniel Podolsky was not allowed to board his Southwest Airlines flight from St. Louis to Chicago on Monday after he refused to change his T-shirt. The college student was reportedly stopped by a gate agent at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport (STL) while he was attempting board wearing a shirt that read BROAD F***ING CITY.

Podolsky received the shirt, inspired by the popular Comedy Central show “Broad City”,  at last week’s SXSW Festival in Austin. The gate agent asked him to cover up and/or or turn the shirt inside out, but Podolsky refused on the ground of free speech. The flight took off without him shortly thereafter.

When people "grow up" they tend not to use theatrics and sensationalism to draw attention to their own self-importance, including the need to be deliberately offensive. We've all "seen" plenty of other things in various settings that aren't suitable for what shold be respectful environments. Grown-ups are polite.

He's just a moron who wanted attention. Hence the smirk on his face. I find that more offensive than the shirt.

Don't think parents with young kids or adults travelling with their elderly parents would see it like you, phlisa.

Can we all just grow up? We've all seen the F word, we know what it means, and looking at the t-shirt isn't going to kill anyone. Why do we have to have the vapors at the sight of a "dirty" word? There are a lot of shirts I find fare more noxious than this that get a pass.

as much as i detest someone having to display this word across their chest in some kind of act of "it's my right" BS. here in Alberta Canada we have an issue coming up where a Medicine Hat basketball players real last name is F*ck. He plays for the Med. Hat Rattlers and I'm sure every teen and pre teen will pay big bucks to be wearing a jersey with his name emblazoned on the back (or front). Wonder how this will be handled by Canadian airlines ???
