In Brief: Nursing Mother Told to Pump Breast Milk in Lavatory For “Comfortability” of Passengers

A nursing mother who recently flew JetBlue Airways says a flight attendant told her to pump breast milk in the lavatory after she denying her request to pump in the back of the aircraft. The young mother, Molly Guy, says the male attendant working the rear of the aircraft on her 6-hour flight to Oakland, Calif. from New York City, told her:

“For the comfortability of other passengers could you go in the bathroom, I think it’s best to go in the bathroom.”

Guy thought it might be a good idea to go to the back — where the crew gathers — to pump the milk, as opposed to sitting in her seat, which was next to an older couple. Guy later took her frustrations to social media. Claiming it was a “crewmember’s error,” JetBlue has since apologized.

“I don’t fault this gentleman, although it sucks that he hasn’t been educated,” says Guy.

ANC, would you eat a meal prepared in an airplanes lavatory? 52pickup, I'm going to guess you've never breastfed a child. Most infants breast feed about every 3-4 hours, more often if they are having a growth spurt. Even if she pumped right before she boarded she would need to do so after about four hours. If not, she would become engorged and start leaking. It's very uncomfortable. It would be a rare nursing mother that could go six hours without feeding or pumping.

We all know what happened. This is not a case of a mother modestly nursing her child. I"m sure the woman was looking for confrontation or just one of those nasty ones that do the militant sit-in breastfeeds. Don't pull your boobs out in view of other people. If she knew she was going to have to pump (and it would be a rare person who couldn't go through the flight without doing so) she could have brought a nursing shirt or blanket. Whatever happened to consideration for others?

Where did this flight attendant grow up? Does he not know that things are only indecent and inappropriate and "think of the kids" if men do it? How could he, who has the wrong gender, dare to interfere with random requests of partially undressing herself by a person of the right gender? How so yesterday of him!

If it isn't federal law (like it is in some states) that a mother may breastfeed wherever she wishes, it should!

I hope the idiot who said this shameful thing has been (or is) promptly fired by B6. If he has such poor judgement, why would B6 want to employ him in a position where he is responsible for passenger safety in the event of an emergency?
