A US Airways flight was searched by police K-9 units upon landing at Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) Tuesday morning as the result of a phoned-in bomb threat. The threat against Flight 648, issued while the Airbus A320 was en route from San Diego, implied there was at least one explosive device onboard.

Officers’ search of the aircraft yielded no such devices, and the Philadelphia Bomb Squad gave the all clear after inspecting both the plane and the 88 passengers onboard. This was reportedly just one of five U.S. flights that received phoned-in bomb threats Tuesday morning.

In the early 90s I think, the IRA realized they could cause a huge amount of chaos and disruption without getting bad publicity for causing death etc. they kept phoning in hoax bomb threats to the UK Motorway system causing horrendous traffic jams right at rush hour. Can not remember the resolution. You could cause huge disruption and chaos and economic problems by doing what is happening. Keep calling in hoax bomb threats- but no bad publicity for causing death. I am not sure what the resolution is. However, if the TSA was overhauled you would be so sure there was no threat that you could start ignoring the threats. I would put airlines in charge of their own security - not the TSA. They have a vested and economic reason for not letting anything happen to their aircraft and passengers. One way or another - this has to get sorted out in my opinion.
