In Brief: Delta Flight Makes Emergency Landing After Pilot Locks Himself Out of the Cockpit

Delta Air Lines Flight 1651 from Minneapolis to Las Vegas had to make an emergency landing Friday after the pilot found himself locked out of the cockpit. According to ABC News, the pilot of the MD-90 claimed the cockpit door malfunctioned upon his return from the bathroom. The co-pilot was forced to make a solo landing at McCarran International Airport (LAS), but because the ground steering controls were on the captain’s side, the aircraft had to be towed to the gate. No injuries were reported among the 168 passengers onboard.

Correction: Delta took delivery of their MD90's starting in 2009, but they were previously owned by other airlines going back to the mid 90's. So, yes, 20 years old which is not considered "ancient" in modern airliners. Many 777's were delivered in the mid 90's too and most people wouldn't consider them ancient.

The article states it was an MD-90, not MD-80. Delta's MD-90 fleet dates back to only 2009. The MD-80 fleet (MD-88's) go back to 1987.

Wasn't this the same route a child accidentally boarded as a stowaway a couple years ago?

I think you mean 30 years old - not 20

Actually, it was in 1979 that the MD-80 took it's first flight. The production ended in 1999. So the average age is around 30 years old.
