In Brief: Cathay Reportedly Plans to Overhaul Loyalty Program, Switch to Revenue-Based System

Cathay Pacific’s Marco Polo Club is about to undergo a major overhaul, with one of the biggest changes involving a switch to revenue-based accrual. The change in the accrual system, which is currently based on fare classes, means loyalty program members will earn miles according to the price of individual fares.

Additional changes to the Hong Kong flag carrier’s loyalty program reportedly include a limit to lounge access for Silver tier members, and eliminating priority check-in and boarding privileges from Green tier members. There is no timeline on when these changes will go into effect.

The article says no timeline given ... so it is likely just a rumour. But irrespective of future changes, CX has been a high class LCC for a long, long time. Coach fares do not earn miles with OneWorld partners (unless full full fool Y), fares are either sky high or dirt cheap, and award availability is excellent. There hasn't been a reason to earn on CX for quite a while now. For mid-haul they are still great and emptying the lobster pan @HKG is definitely worth the $250 intra Asia ticket.

@starflyer Just redeem your AA miles on Cathay award flights. While it is still easy to get seats, who knows what AA will do?

I see Cathay Pacific wants me to avoid them like I avoid Delta Airlines, which means I will probably never fly Cathay Pacific.
