How I Would Spend 1 Million Membership Rewards Points

I don’t have many Membership Rewards points lying around, but I do occasionally end up with a large stash that accumulates for some time. Recently, I covered how I would spend 1 million Ultimate Rewards points. That got me thinking about how I’d put a large stash of Membership Rewards points to use. Not that I anticipate ever accruing such a large sum through manufactured spending, but I certainly have a few fun redemptions in mind.

85,000 Iberia Avios RT LAX – MAD in Business Class

These days, I’m not big on flying around from one country to another and wearing myself out. Instead, I’ve been thinking about flying into and exploring one country for an extended period of time. Spain would be ideal, because of its incredibly rich history and the fact that I can get there on just 85,000 Iberia Avios roundtrip in business class. I’m talking a three- to four-week adventure and hitting the major hotspots: Barcelona, Madrid, Seville, Granada, Valencia, Cordoba. With the points being such a bargain, I’d invite my entire family of eight (parents, siblings, nieces, nephew). It would cost a total of 765,000 miles, but who’s counting with a million points in the bank?

116,000 FlyingBlue Miles RT to Marrakech in Business Class

Morocco has been on my wishlist since I read The Caliph’s House. And 15 years after first picking up The Alchemist, I finally finished the book and would love to visit places like the ones Santiago traveled through to realize his Personal Legend. Air France/KLM Flying Blue makes it easy with roundtrip business class fares requiring just 116,000 miles.

110,000 Aeroplan Miles RT to Ireland in Business Class

There’s no such thing as too many trips to Europe. With 119,000 points left, I’d transfer 110,000 to Aeroplan and book a flight to Ireland. I have yet to travel extensively through the UK and Ireland has been on my bucket list. The tricky part would be that I’d really love to do a road trip, but I can barely drive on the right side of the road. Switching to the left would be a total disaster. Maybe I’ll rent a self-driving car or bring along a friend who lives across the pond and is used to driving on “the opposite side” of the street.

Alternate Reality: ANA Around the World Award

If I ever make the mistake of quitting my job to travel the world again, I’d transfer 450,000 Membership Rewards points to ANA and redeem a first-class around-the-world award. In exchange, I’d get to travel up to 50,000 miles and not have to deal with redeeming different rewards from different programs. I’d skip the other aforementioned trips and use the remaining 550,000 Membership Rewards points for short-haul flights, train travel, hotels, and activities.

Those are my (realistic) ways I’d redeem 1 million Membership Rewards points.
