Hotel Builds Beehives for a Good Cause

In order to combat the worldwide environmental threat to honeybees, the Clift Hotel in San Francisco houses over 100,000 honeybees in rooftop hives outside, and is one of seven citywide hotels that have hives built into their roofs. This development is the latest in a series of environmentally friendly hotel programs, including low-flow toilets and aggressive recycling programs. “This is not about making money, it’s really about raising awareness about sustainability,” said Melissa Farrar, spokeswoman at the Fairmont in San Francisco. The bees at the Clift Hotel produced over 70 pounds of honey last year, and are expected to perform in even greater numbers in 2016.
