Hole in Gatwick Runway Strands Passengers in Mid-Air

Passengers arriving to Gatwick Airport (LGW) this weekend were forced to circle overhead after a large hole reportedly formed on the runway due to surface damage. Several other flights were diverted to other airports, and people living near the airport lodged complaints about jets circling overhead. A spokesperson for Gatwick Airport said: “Our main runway was temporarily closed at 3.48pm while we investigated a reported issue.”

It is believed that the damage could have been caused by heavy rain storms that have pounded southeastern England over the last week following a massive heatwave.
