Here’s How You Can Help Australia

Bushfires currently burning across Australia have destroyed millions of acres of land, destroyed thousands of homes, killed more than two dozen people and about 500 million animals—and they’re not expected to end anytime soon. More than 120 fires are still burning around the country. NPR reports the fires will continue for several more months.

The fires have taken a devastating toll on Australia and the community there. And even though you may be far away in location, you can keep the country in your heart by helping out from afar. FlyerTalk Cares has put together a few great ways to help those in need.

Australia Wildfire Animals Help Donate

Animals

It’s estimated that about 30 percent of the koala population in Australia has been killed in the fires. WIRES Wildlife Rescue is accepting donations for its emergency fund to help koalas and other animals impacted by the fires. The International Fund for Animal Welfare is also accepting donations to help the injured and displaced animal population.

People

The Australian Red Cross is looking for donations to help support on-site emergency and recovery efforts. In addition, the organization has compiled a registry showing people who have checked in as safe during the fires, so if you’re looking for someone you care about, check there.

Firefighters

The firefighters fighting the bushfires are mostly volunteers. If you’re in Australia and are also a firefighter, you may be able to register to help out the NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RSF). You can also directly donate to the NSW RFS and amplify their tweets about the fires. Firefighters around the country are accepting donations as well; search for QLD Fire and Rescue, SA Country Fire Service, VIC Country Fire Authority, Tasmania Fire Service, and Western Australia DFES.
