HACKED: Hilton Hotels Across the U.S.

An unknown number of credit cards could be at risk from to Hilton Hotels card breach

Travelers who used their credit cards at Hilton properties this year between April 21 and July 27 could be at risk thanks to a security breach at the international hotel chain. According to sources within the banking industry, detected fraud patterns suggest point-of-sale registries at Hilton Hotels across the U.S. were compromised by hackers.

Computer security blog Krebs on Security reported the breach earlier this month. The breach was first noticed in August, when Visa sent a warning to banks of a potential situation.

A group of five banks began investigating and discovered the breached credit cards all had a common connection through Hilton Hotels. Hilton brands affected by the breach include the Embassy Suites, Doubletree, Hampton Inn and Suites, and the Waldorf-Astoria. While a spokesperson for Hilton did not comment on the breadth of the data breach, the hotel chain affirmed its commitment to customers.

“Hilton Worldwide is strongly committed to protecting our customers’ credit card information,” the company statement read. “We have many systems in place and work with some of the top experts in the field to address data security. Unfortunately the possibility of fraudulent credit card activity is all too common for every company in today’s marketplace. We take any potential issue very seriously, and we are looking into this matter.”

The incident marks the second time the hotel chain has been targeted by hackers in the past year. In November 2014, a security breach at the hotel chain resulted in the theft of Hilton HHonors points from unsuspecting travelers. A source in the financial sector told Krebs this most recent incident could be related to the November incident.
