Groupon is Selling Cheap Avios!

The Spanish version of Groupon is selling Iberia Avios at attractive prices, which can help you score some great flights in business class at a significantly reduced cost.

You can purchase Avios for as low as €0.0125 apiece, or $0.014, via the popular online marketplace. To take advantage of the promo, pick up a Spanish dictionary as you have to complete the purchase via the Spanish Groupon website. Select one of the mileage package options and make sure to redeem your voucher for the purchased Avios via this form.

The following purchase limits are in effect:

• 1 coupon per Iberia member for 2,000 Avios (sold out)
• 5 coupons per Iberia member for 4,000, 20,000 and 35,000 Avios
• 10 coupons per Iberia member for 8,000 and 15,000 Avios

Groupon ES partners with IberiaPluStore, the airline’s shopping portal, and it’s possible to earn even more miles by making your purchase via the portal. Keep in mind that mileage purchases earn a lower reward than regular Groupon purchases (5X Avios per $1), but it’s still a nice way to maximize your purchase even further.

Is Purchasing Avios a Good Idea?

It certainly can be. Typical Avios purchases will set you back 5.3 cents per mile (*gasp*) to 2.8 cents per mile, depending on the package you choose via Avios.com. You can buy or gift up to 100,000 per year, which will cost you $2,775. Purchasing five 20,000-Avios packages via Groupon costs €1,245, or about $1,405. The savings speak for themselves.

Now, why would you purchase Avios, even at a reduced rate? Because you can redeem them for outstanding value. For example, you can fly Iberia from Chicago directly to Madrid in business class for just 34,000 Avios on off-peak travel dates. This one-way flight in April will set you back just $96 in taxes. With 100,000 Avios, you can fly three people to Madrid, or one person there and back.

A round-trip on this route requires 68,000 Avios + $228 per passenger, an itinerary that costs $4,200 when purchased with cash. If you have a premium-cabin redemption in mind, then yes, purchasing Avios can make a lot of sense.

Furthermore, as a member of both the Iberia Plus and the British Airways Executive Club for at least 90 days, you can transfer Avios between accounts at no extra cost. By purchasing miles in one program, you can utilize them in the other and take advantage of both program rules.
