Gross! Bugs Fell From Overhead Bins and Onto Passengers

An Air Transat flight from London Gatwick Airport (LGW) to Vancouver was delayed, then canceled after brown, cockroach-like insects began falling from overhead luggage compartments onto passengers. The flight was fumigated and travelers were made to disembark. The carrier has publicly apologized.

A Vancouver-bound Air Transat flight from London Gatwick Airport (LGW) was delayed by over a day after brown, roach-like insects fell from the plane’s overhead luggage compartments, The Daily Mail reports. The incident occurred on Wednesday on-board Air Transat Flight 177.

The insects appeared to be coming from the craft’s rear but were also spotted crawling up the aisles of the plane.

Passenger Jenna Sullivan gave her eyewitness account to the outlet, saying, “A bug fell right down by my seat and another landed in the lap of the man next to me. The flight attendant told him to squash it. It was disgusting.”

The flight’s passengers brought the issue to the attention of cabin crew and pest control officers were then summoned to fumigate the cabin.

To make matters worse, passengers were then asked to disembark and the flight was delayed by seven hours. However, the delay eventually turned into a cancellation and passengers were told that the plane would depart on Thursday at 11:10 a.m. local time. This latter departure, however, was also delayed for unexplained reasons.

The exact type of insect hasn’t been verified, but it is thought that the bug was a kind of scarab beetle.

Air Transat has apologized to its passengers via social media.
