Green Lasers Threaten Multiple Aircraft at DTW
On Monday evening, several aircraft flying near Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW) were targeted with several green laser pointers, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). “The FAA directs these reports to law enforcement and the TSA for follow-up,” the organization said in a statement. No additional information about the incident is currently available.
Although it may seem harmless to aim a laser pointer at aircraft in flight, the consequences may be dire; when the beam from a laser pointer connects with a plane’s windshield, it can temporarily blind pilots as it refracts and fills the cockpit with light.
