Gay Couple Allegedly Split up During Priority Boarding

On Saturday, a gay couple was allegedly told by EVA Air staff that they and their child would not be allowed to board the flight together with the rest of the family boarding group.

“I explained we were both the fathers of the child, and they said it was their policy that only one parent can board and the other has to wait in the normal line. Not having flown EVA before, I accepted it and let my husband and child go while I boarded later,” said Jeff Cobb, one of the parents of the child.

In response to the incident and the subsequent backlash on Twitter, a spokesperson for EVA Air said:

“The policy does not limit the number of accompanying adults or specify the relationship to the infant. This unfortunate incident was due to misunderstanding … Our San Francisco ground-handling agent understood that only one parent could board with an infant. We have apologized to our passengers and reminded our airport staff and agents about our priority boarding policy so that we can prevent this kind of incident from happening again.”

I don't buy EVA's excuse about a 'misunderstanding' given that other families were allowed to board with both parents. Just sounds like the usual airline spin when going in to damage control. Never heard of any full service airlines only allowing one parent to board, only LCC like Southwest where there is no pre-allocated seating.

Should read the full referenced story, and you will see it is related to the guys being same sex parents. Cobb says that non same sex parents were both allowed to board. If that is the case then EVA is offering up a very flimsy excuse as to why only one of them was allowed to board. I think the real potential here is that everyone is going to start traveling with an infant just to get early boarding.

referring to it as a "gay family" would have been more appropriate. I was expecting the couple to have literally broken up.

Not related to this incident but that that would indeed be a really good policy for carriers that let infants board early: one adult per infant, not more. I just experienced these "bubbles of 20" around a single wheelchair or infant for a HKG bound flight and they completely ruin the elite boarding privilege.

If we stick to the story above, the story is not related to the fact that the parents are gay. Please stop click bait titles.
