Gatwick Bats Around Backup Runway

According to the operator of Gatwick Airport (LGW), bringing the airport’s backup runway (for takeoff only) into regular use in order to provide support during peal flight hours could allow the London hub to increase aircraft movements by 10-15 per hour.

“The airfield would need some reconfiguration and some additional support infrastructure would be required … However we expect to keep the airport development within the airport’s existing footprint and the airport would remain a two terminal operation,” said the operator.
