Former Flight Attendant Sues Maintenance Company, Says Burst Pipe in Crew Lounge Doused Her With Waste

Claiming that a burst pipe dumped raw sewage on her during a layover in 2012, a former Delta flight attendant is suing the company responsible for maintaining the terminal.

A former Delta Air Lines flight attendant is taking Atlanta Airlines Terminal Corporation to court, blaming the maintenance company for her inability to fly. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports Tina Brock is suing for damages resulting from a 2012 incident wherein she and several other flight attendants were allegedly trapped in a crew lounge and doused with raw sewage.

According to the lawsuit, the incident took place on August 1, 2012. Brock claims that she was resting in a flight crew lounge at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) when a raw sewage pipe in the ceiling broke, soaking her, her personal effects and other flight attendants.

With nowhere to go, Brock claims she and her fellow flight attendants were forced to seek refuge in a closet. When the leak finally stopped, according to the lawsuit, nobody wanted to help evacuate the waste-filled room. Instead, respondents allegedly offered them trash bags to walk in and instructed them to “climb over the recliners” toward the exit.

As a result of the incident, Brock claims she suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) triggered by exposure to airports and enclosed spaces. Brock, a flight attendant with 18 years of experience, is reportedly still a Delta employee even though she quit flying earlier this year.

“The incident speaks for itself,” said Eric Register, Brock’s attorney. “Her doctor has indicated it’s the most serious case (of PTSD) she’s treated.”

Brock is suing the Atlanta Airlines Terminal Corporation for personal damages. The company is responsible for operating and maintaining the Central Passenger Terminal Complex at ATL, a job description which includes the maintenance of the airport’s sewage systems.

I'm glad she didn't have to be a plumber or sewer worker! We are getting absurd with the PTSD stuff. All of us have had "bad things" happen to us (like, in my case, Serbs shooting at me and hitting a land mine in Bosnia). Maybe General Patton was right to have slapped the soldier in WW II.

Gross. But if getting poop spilled on you causes "serious PTSD", I have to question her mental capacity and qualification to be a flight attendant/emergency responder/plane evacuator in the first place.
