Get your Mileage Plan miles ready because Alaska Airlines is running an award sale on Fiji Airways-operated flights, so book your flight by Feb. 29, 2020.

Discount on Award Flights to Australia, New Zealand and South Pacific

Alaska lists separate award charts for each airline partner. Standard redemption rates for economy-class flights from the Contiguous U.S. and Alaska to South Pacific on Fiji Airways clock in at 40,000 Alaska miles each way. Those originating in Hawaii typically redeem 27,500 miles to South Pacific each way.

By redeeming your miles through Feb. 29, you can book airfare for as low as 20,000 miles in each direction. Business class will set you back 40,000 miles each way (down from 55,000 miles each way).

Alaska’s partner Fiji Airways operates flights to the region from three U.S. cities: Honolulu, Los Angeles and San Francisco. If you’re looking to book a flight originating in another U.S. city, make sure that the connecting leg is operated by Alaska Airlines as you can’t mix partners on an award booking.

Keep in mind that Alaska allows stopovers on one-way awards, which means that you can build in a multi-day layover in Nadi, Fiji, on your way to either New Zealand, Australia or another destination in South Pacific where Fiji Airways flies, such as Kiribati, Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu. Doing so will add a new destination to your list and won’t cost you any extra miles.

Make sure to watch out for mixed-cabin itineraries, though. In some cases, when business class isn’t available on all legs, you’ll see options with a long flight segment in economy and a short segment in business class. These awards cost as many miles as those booked fully in business class. Be careful and read all the fine print when redeeming Alaska miles for these flights.

2X Mileage Plan Miles

If you don’t have any Alaska miles to redeem for an award but are still looking for a vacation in the region, you can earn double miles on eligible Fiji Airways-operated flights. Make sure to register on this page to qualify for 2X Mileage Plan miles by traveling between Feb. 1 and June 30. Same as with the award discount, book your flight by Feb. 29 to earn double miles.

In Conclusion

For travelers looking to fly to either Australia, New Zealand or South Pacific, taking advantage of the award sale is a good way to utilize your Mileage Plan miles. Saving 50% off economy tickets and 27% off business tickets from the Mainland U.S. is a significant decrease in price. Hawaii residents aren’t getting as good of a deal, but a discount is a discount nonetheless.
