Could $1 Bus Rides Help Save the Environment?

Well-known in Europe, intercity bus provider FlixBus now serves over 100 different destinations across the US. As a thank you to those it’s already served and in an effort to attract more passengers with its sustainable travel initiatives, FlixBus is offering its customers tickets and fares for 99 cents.

Whatever their mode of transport, today’s travelers are aware of the impact that their journeys may have on the environment. While carbon offsetting is often a term used in conjunction with air travel, intercity bus company FlixBus wants to raise its green profile while rewarding its loyal customers.

Using a fleet of fuel-efficient and low-emission buses and coaches, the company noted in a statement that more and more people across the US are swapping long plane rides for long-distance coaches.

All Tickets for 99 Cents

With this in mind, it explained that, “As a symbol of gratitude to the 1 million+ passengers that have taken FlixBus in the United States – nearly 65 percent of which had never taken a long-distance bus before – and to encourage green travel in 2020, FlixBus is selling all tickets booked before Dec 22 for travel between January 6 to March 15 for only 99 cents.”

Headquartered in Munich and Berlin, the company began back in 2013 and provides connectivity throughout Europe. According to its statement, the operator “is now America’s fastest-growing intercity bus provider.” It offers services to over 100 destinations across the country and counts California, Nevada and Arizona as part of its core American market.

On some routes, such as that connecting Las Vegas to Los Angeles, it offers up to 14 services a day in either direction.

Sustainability at the Core of Flixbus

Sustainability has been at the core of the FlixBus business since its inception and among its initiatives, it introduced the world’s very first long-distance electrical buses in France and Germany in 2018 and tested the first long-distance electrical bus in the US just this year. It has also announced plans to introduce and operate long-distance buses powered by fuel cells.

In addition to its technological advances, FlixBus offers all of its passengers the chance to carbon offset their journeys. More about the company’s array of sustainability initiatives can be viewed here.

Leave Your Comfort Zone

Commenting on the sale and the company’s wider goals, Pierre Gourdain, managing director, said, “The new year—and the start of a new decade at that, invokes the desire to start anew and lead a bolder, more adventurous kind of life. We’re hoping with this sale we’ll get people to leave their comfort zone, get out of their cars, and start exploring the world around them.”

He added, “Nearly 65 percent of our passengers have never taken the bus before, proving we are offering a different type of bus travel. This sale is to thank our US customers and show even more Americans that they can take the trips they’ve always wanted to take. For $0.99, you can fulfill your adventures and be conscious of the environment while doing so.”

I can see a bus for trips up to 200 miles (4 hours). Less than 100 miles, may as well drive. You'd have to get to the bus station - so you may as well drive yourself on short trips. Sure can't see killing a day on a 7+ hour bus ride SF to LA when a plane is about 2 hrs counting checkin. Of course a bus could be a fraction of the cost. What this country needs is high-speed rail from Boston to DC.
