Finnair to Start Measuring Passenger Weight At the Gate

Finnair will start weighing passengers at the gate in a new pilot project at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport. The goal is to collect information on the average weight of passengers and their hand luggage.

Weighing is voluntary, and the data will be used “for various loading and balancing calculations.” According to Sami Suokka, Finnair’s client process at airports, the company currently uses the European Aviation Safety Agency’s (EASA) standard weights for 2009, but now wants to get Finnair’s own print traffic and customer-based printing data.

Data gathered will include luggage, age, sex, purpose of the trip, travel class and hold baggage.
