FAA Modifies Lights, Saves Birds

The FAA has made a slight modification of the lighting patterns at towers around the United States that it believes could save the lives of thousands of birds. Research by wildlife biologists has shown that birds are more attracted to steady white and red lights than flashing lights, and an independent study conducted by the FAA yielded similar results. New installations of tower lighting will incorporate the substitution of flashing lights for solid, unblinking ones; tower operators using old lighting systems will be required to follow the FAA’s recommendations.
