Estonia Air Is No More After EU Finds It Received Illegal Financial Aid

Estonia Air has officially been put out of business as of Sunday after the European Union (EU) determined it received state aid illegally. Margrethe Vestager, EU Antitrust Commissioner, said the carrier must pay back Estonia’s taxpayers $92.1 million along with interest. The Estonian government has reportedly put almost $65 million into the carrier to keep it afloat.

The airline “didn’t carry out the necessary restricting to become viable as a business,” said Vestager. Passengers who purchased tickets with the airline for upcoming flights will be refunded or placed on an alternate flight.
